Writing Challenge: 500 Words a Day, 5 Days a Week

Here's a writing schedule I think I can maintain. If I consistently write 500 words a day, five days a week, I will finish the rough draft of my novel in 28 weeks. That's figuring for 70,000 words. By January 1, I will have it licked. At least the first draft.

Who is up for doing it with me? 500 words a day, come hell or high water. That's a mere 2 pages.

Here's the deal: 500 words a day, 5 days a week -- no excuses. You get your 500 words in even if the kids are driving you up the wall. Even if you're fighting with the spouse. Even if the boss let's you go. Even if the sky is falling, you wrestle those 500 words down onto the page.

Deal?

This is a great idea, and I love how public it is--putting it out there in cyberspace: I will write 500 words a day. Accountability is everything. And, 500 words is doable, even on the worst days, and it will really get you somewhere fast. My hunch is there will be plenty of days when you exceed the 500 words, when you get there and just keep going...

I'm deep into revisions, so I'm not going to join you quite yet, but I'm here, cheering you on...

I love your blog and will try to join you in writing 500 words a day. There are some days due to injuries I have that I will fail, but every day I will start over and plan on that goal.
Thank you for the great blog.

Thanks so much, Billy. I'm just home from Alaska, so I apologize for not responding sooner. But I'm eager to hear all about your novel. How far along are you in your first draft? As you say, each day is a new opportunity to begin again. I'm so happy to have a new friend to share this journey with! I'm nearly finished reading a wonderful book I can't wait to share with you all in a week or so, after the jetlag wears off. What's on your summer reading list?

How goes the revising, Susan? We're cheering you on, too!

Hi Sheryl, I am reading The Extinction Club by Jeffrey Moore. I just finished Russian Winter by Daphne Kalotay and it was amazing.

I have a pretty extensive outline and wrote about four chapters. It is a literary novel that takes place in Romania. How was Alaska? Do you have a Facebook or Twitter page too?

I love your blog.

Impressive, William! Keep it up. And please share whatever tips you have, things you're figuring out as you go. Would really love to hear about your process. Haven't read either of those books, but I'll check them out. Anything you've picked up from Moore or Kalotay we might learn from too? I'm reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett, getting lots of good ideas about handling POV.

And yes, I'm on FB. I'll look for you there. I haven't ventured into Twitter. Sounds like maybe you have?

Russian Winter is amazing. Daphne Kalotay shows the dark past of a ballerina in Stalin era Russia with her present life in modern day America when she sells her jewelry from that time period. She slowly reveals the secrets of her past by building tension in two different story lines without sacrificing momentum. I always make the mistake of trying to rush to the climax of a scene. I got that habit from writing so many short stories.
Jeffrey Moore's book has two broken, eccentric characters in it that are so real and intriguing that I can't book the book down. It also involves wildlife and nature which is something that is an important part of my story. I can learn form this book by the way he creates believable, interesting characters that I really care about. I can't wait to read more of it.
If I could just come close to the ability of these two writers I would be happy. As of right now I am nowhere near their writing level.

Sheryl, I'm taking a few notes, but won't really get into the revising until I get back from Tin House later this month. I'm anxious to get started!!
So, how goes the 500 word a day challenge?
